Times were tough and the challenges many in the first half of the 20th Century. Basic needs like food, clothing and shelter were life's highest priorities. In such lean times, self reliance became the norm. Fishing might supply the family table but often the common man simply could not afford to purchase factory-made lures. Instead, available materials and household supplies, coupled with innate ingenuity and working hands, some skilled through years of labor, led to the creation of an endless variety of what collectors now refer to as "folk art lures." While typically the individuals creating such objects had no formal art or design training, they may have been expert outdoorsman or craftsmen.

Each of these hand made artifacts is a miniature time capsule and reflection of not only of the era it was made, but also the personality of its maker. Folk Art Lure designs are endless and range from primitive forms in muted colors, to unusual mechanical contraptions, to the comical/whimsical, highly abstract and outrageous.

Collection of folk art in general and folk art fishing lures in particular has increased substantially in recent years. What once were simply viewed as tools to catch fish are now prized by collectors as miniature works of art.

If you have quality, early hand crafted lures or fishing tackle available, I would love to hear from you! I also collect and research old fish hooks, harnesses and mechanical hooks. Please visit my other website at http://www.hooks-n-harnesses.com

Vintage Folk Art Fishing Lures
and Tackle

Book Summary:

The significant merit and historical importance of folk art fishing lures and tackle has remained largely undiscovered by the folk art community. This book will change that. With emphasis on vintage folk art lures, Mr. Kieny takes the reader on a visual journey that will surprise, delight and amaze even the most die-hard folk art connoisseur. Possessing all the qualities of the finest folk art, these small, hand-crafted, utilitarian treasures were made for the sole purpose of catching fish.

Through their makers’ unconstrained vision and talent, miniature ‘sculptures' of great character were created – each lure original, unique and personal…evoking the realities of everyday life in a bygone era.

Comprehensive background, historical and introductory sections arm the reader with rich perspective on both vintage folk art fishing lures and folk art in general. Using past trends and thoughtful insight, Mr. Kieny positions and contrasts the current and prospective vintage folk art fishing lure market with the duck decoy and fish decoy markets. Kieny also includes detailed measures to assess an individual folk art lure’s quality, condition, legitimacy and value.

With nine distinct, thematic-based sections and over 700 color photographs accompanied by detailed descriptions, readers will experience an incredible diversity of examples from both known and anonymous makers.

Mr. Kieny, noted author, historian and tackle collector has been a member of The National Fishing Lure Collectors Club for 20 years. His first book, Patented Hooks, Harnesses & Bait-Holders - Identification and Value Guide with Collections was published in 2008. Jeff is a passionate lifetime fisherman and enjoys fishing with antique fishing lures and tackle. Now semi-retired, Jeff and his wife Glee live in Missouri, south of Kansas City.
